From Witness to Action: Why I Support WWF-Canada

For the past eight years, I have proudly supported WWF-Canada because I have seen firsthand what is at stake.

Nature has always been important to me, but my perspective changed profoundly after traveling on two safaris in Africa, one in Sri Lanka, and a polar bear expedition in Churchill, Manitoba — the Polar Bear Capital of the World.

In Africa, I watched elephants cross the savanna at sunrise and observed lions raising their young in an unforgiving landscape. But I also learned about the dual crisis facing wildlife: relentless poaching for ivory and horns, combined with habitat loss and intensifying climate-driven droughts. Water sources are disappearing. Vegetation is thinning. Elephants, rhinos, and giraffes are not only threatened by illegal hunting — they are increasingly challenged by starvation, shrinking habitats, and rising temperatures. The combined pressure is accelerating extinction risks and demands urgent conservation action.

In Sri Lanka, I saw how interconnected ecosystems truly are — how water, forests, wildlife, and people depend on balance to survive.

Nothing impacted me more than standing on the shores of Hudson Bay in Churchill. Seeing a polar bear in the wild is unforgettable. These powerful animals rely on sea ice to hunt seals, their primary food source. As the climate warms, the ice forms later and melts earlier, shortening their hunting season. With fewer opportunities to feed, many bears face longer fasting periods and a growing risk of starvation.

Climate change stopped being abstract for me in that moment. It became visible. Immediate. Urgent.

I cannot personally stop sea ice from melting or patrol protected lands in Africa. But I can choose not to stand on the sidelines.

Supporting WWF-Canada is more than a donation — it is a decision to act.

If you have ever felt awe in nature, if you believe future generations deserve to witness elephants on the savanna and polar bears on sea ice, I encourage you to join me. Your support fuels conservation science, protects critical habitats, strengthens anti-poaching efforts, and helps wildlife adapt in a rapidly changing world.

The challenges are significant — but so is our collective ability to make a difference.

Now is the time to turn awareness into action. Together, we can help ensure that the wild endures.
